And we're off!

We picked up a rental car and headed to Chicago at 3:45 pm Thursday afternoon. Just our luck, we drove right into tornado warnings near Danville, IL and had to drive back south a bit to stay clear of the storms.  We finally got into Chicago around 9:45 pm and spent the night at Mom's house, not far from O'Hare airport. Grumpy graciously greeted us upon arrival and then we headed straight to bed.

Since we weren't going to feel at ease until we were at the airport, checked in, with bags weighed, and through security, we headed to the airport early Friday morning.  Our flight is scheduled to depart at 9:05 pm.  We returned the rental car, took the shuttle to the terminal, and arrived at the check in line at 10:30 am!  Feeling pretty good at this point, but still not completely satisfied since we weren't at our gate yet.  Check in went smoothly. Our checked bags just barely made the 50 lb weight limit. Bag 1 - 49.5 lbs. Bag 2 - 50.0 lbs. Bag 3 - 50.5 lbs.  I'm surprised the airline didn't want to charge us for the 1/2 lb overrage on bag 3!  Next we had to go through the dreaded security.

We somehow made it through security unscathed.  The only thing that didn't make it through was the pocket knife Kim was wielding in her carry on bag!  In order to make weight, we had to move some items from our checked luggage to our carry ons.  The knife was in a bag with the flashlight and all of our power adapters that we moved to Kim's carry on.  At least none of us got the full body scan. We all walked through without any beeps or alarms.  Not even the 5 lbs of cash strapped to our chests raised any red flags!

Now we could breathe easy.  We had plenty of time until our flight (9 hrs or so) and most of the pre-flight stress was behind us.  First order of business - Garrett's popcorn for Sam!  He's actually licking the greasy cheddar off his fingers as I type this.  Next, we enjoyed our last American lunch for a few weeks - Chicken Nuggets and Fries (Sam), Turkey Sandwich and Chips (Greg) and a Chicken Salad (Kim).  We washed that all down with some Starbucks coffee and hot chocolate, then found a spot to plug in all of our devices.  We are now settled in comfortably for the next 7 hours until we board our flight.

Driving into the storm!

All plugged in!
